WHO WE ARE

Horse Rescue Australia Inc. is a non-profit organisation devoted to the care and rehabilitation of horses that have been abused, abandoned or neglected. Horse Rescue is a registered charity run entirely by volunteers and is self-funded through membership, sponsorship, donations and benefi t events. Horse Rescue receives no government funding.

HOW IT BEGAN

Horse Rescue Australia was founded in 1986 by Sally Davies, who rescued SJ and Gumdrop, the first of many horses. They were so badly malnourished that the veterinary prognosis was bleak. SJ was also nursing a torn and bleeding mouth from cruel handling. Th e horses featured in a newspaper Sally co-produced and soon readers were charting their progress with interest. Off ers of assistance in caring for the two horses began to trickle in, very sadly so did reports of horses in similar conditions. People were seeking help to rescue and rehabilitate those horses and Horse Rescue Australia was born.

HORSE RESCURE AUSTRALIA TODAY

Horse Rescue Australia presently operates mainly in Sydney and surrounding areas. Since 1986 over 1,400 horses have passed through our gates with the vast majority placed into new homes. By supporting the new owners and not allowing horses to be on sold, we are able to assure that they will never return to the condition in which we found them. Although sometimes heartbreaking, it is immensely gratifying when horses make a full recovery and are placed in caring, new homes. Such rehabilitation is a long and costly process, with special feeding, ongoing veterinary attention and necessities such as dentistry and farrier work. Often additional training is needed for horses that have minimal or poor handling and for abused horses that have no reason to trust people.
